Guess Proof Passwords

VICTORIA -- Don’t even think of using your mother’s maiden name, your spouse’s name or the dog’s name. Ditch birthdates, addresses and any word in any language.

If you want to create a computer password that’s tough to crack, avoid all of the above, say security experts.

Instead, put together a random string of at least eight characters, says Jens Weber-Jahnke, associate professor in the University of Victoria’s computer science department and co-founder of the Pervasive Primary Care Informatics Laboratory, aimed at developing information technology to improve health-care services.

Industry/Research Internships

The new BC Industrial Internship Program connects BC businesses with university researchers in all disciplines who have advanced levels of expertise in areas that address vital research opportunities.

It partners graduate student and postdoctoral fellow interns and their supervising professors with BC companies, hospitals, government agencies and not-for-profit organizations. These connections help partners utilize new tools, technologies and methodologies to address issues that are vital to an organization’s success. Partner organizations benefit from the power of advanced research while interns and professors benefit from new research opportunities.

Potential privacy policy violation?

IBM has recdently asked academic teachers to submit email addresses of students they teach, so that they can be contacted for recruiting purposes. In their instructions, IBM does not ask academics to solitic consent of their students. Does submitting this information without consent represent a violation of the University's privacy policy?

Here is an excerpt of IBMs message to the professors:

if you teach courses or perform research using IBM and/or open source technologies, please use these simple steps to provide your students access to the SOS.
